CHAPTER TWELVE
The bell over the door tinkled as I strode into Gold Rush Flowers, and Katie looked up from behind the counter and raised her eyebrows at me.
âHowâs your new job?â she asked.
âI survived my first day,â I said, pulling up a stool so I could plant myself down next to her. âIâm not interrupting you, am I?â
âWould I stop you if you were? Youâre good company.â
âAw, thanks,â I said, tilting my head. âHowâs work in the world of florists?â
She tucked the papers she had been working on back under the desk, and planted her chin on her fist. The floral perfume of the flowers filled the air, and I inhaled the delicious scent.
âI donât know how things are going,â she said, with a sigh. âI mean, workâs okay, but . . .â
I raised an eyebrow. âBut?â
She ran a hand through her hair, which was when I noticed she looked a little shaken. I felt a wave of concern wash over me. Ever since she told me sheâd lost her husband, I noticed the little cloud behind her eyes that seemed to follow even her brightest smile. I wanted her to know that I was here to help her if she needed it. I knew how it felt to miss someone.
âA guy asked me out today,â she said, finally.
âOh,â I said, feeling surprised. Not what Iâd expected her to say. âIs that a good thing? Or, that must be a lot, right?â
âYeah, I didnât know what to say to him,â she said, letting out a long sigh. âHe seems like a nice enough guy, but I havenât dated since, well, you know. Since.â
âIt wouldnât hurt to go out for one meal, right?â I said, biting my lower lip. âItâs been a long time, and it doesnât have to be anything serious. It can just be a date. Or just food. Either way, even if itâs awful youâd get the first date out of the way.â
âIâm not sure if I want to dump all my emotions on this guy,â she said, making a face. âNot exactly what heâs looking for, Iâm guessing.â
âHey, donât talk about my friend like that. Youâd be a great catch if, you know, youâre ready. What did you say to him when he asked you out?â
She gave me a look. âI told him Iâd think about it.â
âDid he leave his number?â
âYeah, right here,â she said, shoving the piece of paper in my direction as her cheeks turned a little pink. âI mean, he was very nice. Funny. And cute.â
âSee, look how many positive things you have to say about him,â I said, the corners of my mouth curving upward. âYou donât want your first date to be with some guy who annoys you because you turned this one down, right? Go out with him. Just once, to say you have.â
âIâm not sure Iâm ready,â she said, wrinkling her nose. âItâs going to take a lot for me to want to get back out there, you know?â
âBut you want to be married again someday, right?â
She grimaced.
